Spectators will get to see hockey greats Doug Gilmour, Curtis Joseph, Guy Carbonneau and Patrice Brisebois back on the ice among many other favourites.

Avro Lancaster Bomber WWII

Avro Lancaster Bomber WWII

Probably the most famous Allied bomber of World War II, the Lancaster had impressive flying characteristics and operational performance. The Lancaster was the RAF’s only heavy bomber capable of carrying the 12,000-lb Tallboy and 22,000-lb Grand Slam bombs. The aircraft demonstrated superbly its right to fame with the daring and precise raids on the Ruhr dams in May 1943, and also the sinking of the German battleship Tirpitz in November 1944.

Thousands of Canadian aircrew and other personnel served with the RCAF and RAF’s Lancaster squadrons in England; and thousands of Canadians at home worked at Victory Aircraft in Malton (Toronto), Ontario, where they produced over 400 Lancaster Mk X’s. In total, more than 7300 Lancasters rolled off the production lines in Britain and Canada. Only two still fly.

The CWH Museum has dedicated its Mynarski Memorial Lancaster to the memory of Pilot Officer Andrew Charles Mynarski, VC, of 419 (Moose) Squadron, 6 (RCAF) Group. Mynarski won 6 Group’s only Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth’s highest award for gallantry in battle. On the night of 12/13 June 1944, his Lancaster X was shot down by a Luftwafffe night fighter. As the bomber plunged earthwards, Mynarski, his flying clothing a fire, tried in vain to free his trapped rear gunner from the jammed rear turret. Miraculously, the gunner lived to relate the story of Mynarski’s bravery. Unfortunately, Mynarski died from his severe burns.

A breathtaking new season at the Art Gallery of Hamilton

January 9th, 2012

The Art Gallery of Hamilton kicks off 2012 with three new exhibits, all opening this Saturday, January 14th (and running to May 21).

  • Kristin Bjornerud: Safe Harbour explores myths and legends, dreams and superstitions through Bjornerud’s lyrical watercolours.  Many of the artist’s paintings depict scenes of women in tableaux, often in a state of creation.
  • Mark Lewis: Rush Hour, Morning and Evening, Cheapside is a film work from the collection of the Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal. The film explores the moving shadows of pedestrians in the slanting light of morning and end of day when the sun, low in the sky, stretches, silhouettes along the ground.
  • Mark Lewis: Forte! was filmed as the artist flew over the Italian Alps and a Napoleonic fort.   The Hamilton-born filmmaker is now based in London, England.

Later this month, the AGH invites you to explore the fascinating world of iconic Canadian artist William Kurelec in the traveling exhibit The Messenger. Kurelec (1927-1977) is one of the country’s most recognized artists of the 20th century best known for his reminiscences of his Prarie childhood and as a chronicler of the experiences of various cultural groups in Canada. Alongside these paintings, evoking a sense of a nostalgic, innocent past, are those depicting a darker, more troubling vision.   See how the artist reconciled both extremes in this fascinating exhbit on until April 29, 2012.

The AGH’s popular i♥filmseries also returns this week. Kicking off the 2012 lineup is the movie The Way, an inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigating the ever-changing and complicated world starring Martin Sheen as a grieving father and directed by his son, Emilio Estevez. They Way screens Wednesday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at Empire Jackson Square 6 Cinemas.  Click here for a full lineup of the 2012 winter series and film descriptions.
